WAKA AMA MANUHEREKIA
Waka Ama has become a regular and much-loved kaupapa on Lake Dunstan, with ongoing paddling sessions bringing whānau together to strengthen tinana, wairua, and whakawhanaungatanga. These sessions are about more than just fitness—they’re about connection: to the water, to culture, and to each other.
Each week, tamariki, rangatahi, and pakeke gather to paddle as one, learning teamwork, discipline, and the traditions of our tūpuna. The growing commitment from our community reflects the power of Waka Ama to uplift hauora—physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually.
Whether training for competition or paddling for joy, Waka Ama on Lake Dunstan is a steady heartbeat in our local hauora journey.
The Waka Ama boats are named ‘Sweet Koura’ and ‘Tuna Kuwharuwharu’
‘Sweet Koura’ is named after Whaea Francie and Peter Divers Koura farm in Alexandra
‘Tuna Kuwharuwharu’ is named off the long-finned eel who was caught in the dam when it was created.
Waka fit, Haka fit is a program designed for our rangatahi paddlers who paddle in the Summer and join in other fitness classes in the Winter. Waka fit, Haka fit is sponsored by Te Puni Kokori for the 13 -24-year group.
Waka Ama trainings sessions twice a week Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30pm and Sundays at 2pm or adults and rangatahi out on Lake Dunstan (look out for the flag).
